About this research opportunity
The overarching research objective is to introduce students to the field of Laboratory Astrophysics that studies physical phenomena in the laboratory through fundamental experimental research into the underlying processes that drive processes in space. In this group-based research experience, a cohort of <10 participating students will do a fully immersive training on the nano-scale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) instrument available in the School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University. The NanoSIMS will be used to analyze meteorites in order to identify and characterize stardust grains with exotic compositions. SESE hosts the largest meteorite collection in a public university: the Buseck Center for Meteorite Studies. Students will work with the curator of the Meteorite Center to choose the best samples for their stardust grain searches. Weekly discussion sessions will be held remotely, which will include talks delivered by several SESE astrophysicists and instrument experts.
This is a research experience that will span across two semesters starting in fall 2024.
Students will be on-campus in Spring 2025 for 9 days to work with instruments in the lab. The deadline to APPLY is August 30th, 2024.
Eligibility
ASU Online student enrolled in degree programs within The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
Prerequisite courses (e.g., AST 111-112, PHY 111-114) for participating in this research activity are critical, and are a part of the online Astronomical and Planetary Sciences, BS degree in The College. These courses would have covered foundational physical and mathematical concepts for astrophysics and assumes prior knowledge of algebra and calculus. AST 301 course is recommended but not required, and students who are enrolled in the AST 301 course in fall 2022 are eligible to participate.
Mentor(s)
Dr. Maitrayee Bose & Dr. Richard Hervig

No
How to apply
The students have to submit a 2-page CV and a 1-page cover-letter expressing their interest to take part in the research experience. The reasons for applying for the hand-on experience will be used to select students for the research experience. The materials should be sent to Dr. Maitrayee Bose (Maitrayee.Bose@asu.edu). The deadline to apply is August 30th, 2024.
