Investigating the interactive effects of pregnancy and surgical menopause on cognitive and affective profiles

Infographic outlining the Bimonte-Nelson Menopause and Memory Laboratory’s research. The lab uses a personalized, multisystem approach to examine how hormone exposure and current hormone profiles, the presence and function of female reproductive organs, and brain functions—including memory, anxiety, and depression—interact to affect women’s health. The goal is to identify these relationships, improve health outcomes, and empower women and their physicians with knowledge.

About this research opportunity

Students will score and analyze behavioral data collected from an ongoing study. The study tests the effects of prior pregnancy on cogniton, anxiety, and depression. Students will learn the literature within the research domain as well. Specific learning objectives include: 1. Become adept in memory type data scoring from behavioral maze tasks, 2. Learn data video retracking methodology, 3. Build competency in reading rodent cognition and behavior literature, 4. Understand and perform statistical analyses of small animal maze behavior and neuroscience data output, and 5. Present data related to preclinical models of memory.
