Exploring Earth's deep interior through computer simulations

The image is of earth with a portion cut out to expose the interior core.

About this research opportunity

This project will bring experience to students on using computer simulations to investigate the nature of mantle convection in Earth. Students will develop and run their own computational simulations using open-source software. They will learn to write computer codes (Python and shell script), run numerical simulations, analyze big data, create scientific data visualizations, and present their findings to each other and to the broader audience of the School of Earth and Space Exploration.

Eligibility
  1. ASU Online students majoring in a degree program offered by The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  2. Coding experience preferred but not required.
  3. Knowledge of geological sciences preferred but not required.
  4. Calculus. Students who have great enthusiasm in coding, math, physics, and geological sciences will benefit the most from this project.
