Cannabis Legalization and Criminal Law Reform: How States Revise Criminal Law for Cannabis Post-Legalization

About this research opportunity

Currently, 40 U.S. states have legalized the use of medicinal cannabis, and 24 states, 2 U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia have legalized adult use (i.e., recreational cannabis for adults 21 years or older). The goal of this project is to map state-level cannabis criminal sentencing reforms and develop a typology of reform efforts. To do this, students will be trained to locate historical cannabis sentencing laws in online legal archives, document and analyze these changes, and co-author a publicly facing policy report. Students will receive a stipend of $1,000 and work an average of 3.5 hours per week throughout the Spring 2026 semester. Students selected for this opportunity will receive structured training and close supervision through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous check-ins and weekly goals. While the project is open to all students, it is especially suited for those interested in law, drug policy, criminology, and socio-legal studies.

Eligibility

ASU Online students who are enrolled in degree programs offered by The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

This is a great opportunity for students in the social sciences looking to gain entry-level experience in data collection and analysis, especially for those with an interest in law, the criminal legal system, criminal law reform, and/or cannabis and drug policy. No prior experience in data collection or analysis is necessary; selected students will receive training on the skills needed to complete the work. Students selected must have a high level of personal responsibility, can work independently and in team environments, and have great communication skills (e.g., ask questions, communicate needs, discuss findings, etc.).
