Research Skills Experience in Astronomical Imaging

imagining sample related to astronomy research

About this research opportunity

Prior to commencing the research work, students will complete lessons on telescopes/digital imaging/image analysis tools. The goal of the research analysis is to search for stellar and brown dwarf companions to young, nearby stars. Data for the project will come from observatory archives or observations from the 10-meter Keck telescope, with the students learning how to search for data, download, and view the images with the free SAOimage ds9 software. Working in groups, the students will analyze a set of astronomical images to do projects such as search for companion stars/brown dwarfs and would measure the positions and brightness of the candidate companions in the images. Students will also join a zoom session during an observing night at the Keck telescope.
