About this research opportunity

This undergraduate, action research experience engages online students who take part in our Courts & Society (JUS308) – 3 credit hour course in Fall 2022 session A.

Students actively participate in three different learning experiences: 1) they learn about various aspects and functions of the US court system (coursework), 2) they research specific state/local laws (in their locality) related to civil traffic violations and conduct three local court observations to gain insight into how courts resolve civil traffic complaints, and 3) they work in small groups to analyze secondary data from the Tempe Municipal Court assessing how complaints/fines are distributed within city boundaries (geography) and distributed across various offender demographics (race, estimated income, etc.).

Eligibility

Must be able to take 300-level course work (general elective). This course targets a broad range of online students throughout the university. It seeks to provide an introduction to the US court system.
